Alan Arakawa è nato il 20 settembre del 1951 sull'isola di Maui, una delle 8 perle delle incantate delle Hawaii.
Alan ha vissuto quasi l'intera sua vita su Maui, che ha lasciato solo per brevi periodi quando aveva dieci anni e quando ha frequentato l'università di Honolulu laureandosi in economia aziendale.
Cresciuto in una fattoria, si è occupato di immobili, di assicurazioni ed ha anche avuto una sua società di grafica, poi frustrato dalle lungaggine burocratiche che incontrò come supervisore di una società di gestione delle acque reflue, decise di buttarsi in politica.
Ha iniziato come consigliere di contea e 4 anni anni più tardi era diventato l'indaffaratissimo sindaco di Maui nonché il più longevo della storia dell'isola.
Sposato, padre di una figlia, come giocatore Alan nasce scacchista, ed è tutt'oggi uno dei migliori giocatori dell'isola, poi un giorno fu invitato da un collega di lavoro a fare un bridge casalingo e da allora fu questo il suo primo amore.
Il lavoro non gli lascia il tempo per partecipare a competizioni internazionali al di fuori delle isole, nondimeno, questo non gli ha impedito di mettere insieme più di 2000 masterpoints.
Alan Arakawa was born on September 20, 1951 on the island of
Maui, one of the 8 pearls of the enchanted Hawaii.
Alan lived almost his entire life on Maui, who left only for short periods when he was ten years old and when he attended Honolulu University graduating in business administration.
Raised on a farm, he dealt with real estate, insurance and also had his own graphics company, then frustrated by the bureaucracy that he encountered as a supervisor of a wastewater management company, he decided to jump into politics.
He started as a county councilor and 4 years later he became the busy mayor of Maui as well as the longest in the island's history.
Married to a daughter, as a player, Alan was born a chess player, and is still one of the best players on the island, then, one day he was invited by a work colleague to make a house bridge and since then this was his first love.
The work does not allow him time to take part in international competitions outside the islands, however, this has not prevented him from putting together more than 2000 master points.
