Marty  BERGEN

Nato il 21 aprile del 1948 a Farmingdale nel cuore di Long Island nello Stato di New York, due volte laureato, Marty è uno dei professionisti più eclettici ed uno degli insegnanti di maggior successo degli Stati Uniti.

Cresciuto nel Bronx, si è spostato a Spring Valley circa 60Km a nord di New York quando aveva 9 anni e ha iniziato a  giocare quando ne aveva 14.

In gioventù praticò con discreto successo e a livello agonistico il tennis che ama molto ancor oggi assieme alla pallacanestro.

Insegnante di scuola per un breve periodo, si è sposato abbastanza presto con Cheryl Lance che gli ha dato due figli e si è trasferito a White Plains dove, nel 1976 ha iniziato a insegnare bridge.

Oggi vive con la moglie a Palm Beach Gardens in Florida, una cittadina rivierasca che si trova circa 80 Km. a Nord di Boca Raton.

 Da giocatore ha vinto diversi Campionati Nazionali tra i quali ricordiamo la Spingold del 1984, 2 Reisingers (1985, 91), 2 Mitchell (1981, 84) e il Wernher del 1983.

 Ma Marty è certamente più noto ed amato come insegnante, per la sua originalità e per la sua non convenzionalità. Ha ideato per primo sia i Corsi al telefono che quelli on line.

 In coppia con Larry Cohen ha teorizzato molte applicazioni della Legge delle Prese Totali strutturandole in una serie di convenzioni simpatiche alla gente, alle quali ha dato nomi originali e che oggi, grazie al loro successo, sono giocate dai giocatori di mezzo mondo.

 Particolarmente apprezzata è anche la sua opera di scrittore, ha scritto più di una ventina di libri di successo nei quali illustra spaccati dell'universo dichiarativo con chiarezza e capacità di convincimento.

Come articolista tiene una regolare colonna sul Bollettino dell'A.C.B.L. fin dal 1976 e su Bridge Today dal 1988.

Nel 2022 Marty è stato eletto nella Hall of Fame del bridge americano.

Marty A. Bergen (born 1948) is an American bridge player and writer. A 10-time national champion, American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Grand Life Master, and World Bridge Federation (WBF) World International Master, he retired from active competition in 1993 to pursue his dream of becoming a bridge author (see story below). 

Bergen is well-known for his innovative development of bidding conventions and treatments, including DONT and Bergen Raises. Together with his long-time bridge partner Larry Cohen, he popularized the Law of Total Tricks, Support Double, and 1NT Semi-forcing. 

Marty has authored 22 bridge books, two of which won the American Bridge Teachers' Association's prestigious Bridge Book of the Year award, namely Points Schmoints!: Bergen's Winning Bridge Secrets in 1996 and Declarer Play the Bergen Way in 2005.  He has had a column in the Master Pointers section of ACBL Bridge Bulletin since 1976.  Marty is also a panel member for The Bridge World's Master Solvers Club. 

Marty's latest books are Slam Bidding Made Easier and Better Slam Bidding the Bergen Way (companion workbook), and he has just introduced the first four of his new Secrets to Winning Bridge booklet series:  Modern Doubles, 2/1 Game Forcing, 1NT Forcing, and Hand Evaluation. 

Prior to becoming a full-time bridge professional in 1976, Marty earned his B.A. and M.A. in Education at the State University of New York.  He taught for four years in public and private school systems in New York and Florida. 

In addition to conducting bridge cruises, Marty now teaches and writes in Florida, where he lives with his wife Cheryl and dogs, Muffie and Butchsky. 

In his leisure time, he is an avid sports fan (he played competitive tennis in high school/college) and loves watching his favorite teams compete.

In 2002 he is elected in the Hall of Fame of American bridge.
