Michail Moiseevič Botwinnick nacque a Repino (l'ex Kuokkala) il 17 agosto del 1911 ed è stato un grande scacchista russo per molti anni campione del mondo all'inizio della seconda metà dello scorso secolo.
Michail che aveva imparato a giocare a scacchi quando aveva 12 anni si laureò in ingegneria elettrica e si alternò per tutta la vita tra la carriera professionale a quella da giocatore senza mai diventare un professionista degli scacchi.
5 volte campione del mondo e 7 volte campione olimpico fu anche 6 volte campione russo.
Negli anni '70, abbandonato il gioco agonistico si dedicò alla scrittura di software per scacchi e nel corso della sua vita non disdegnò di avvicinarsi anche al bridge.
Scomparve a Mosca il 5 maggio del 1995.
