William Edward Brougher è nato il 17 febbraio del 1889 a Jackson nel Mississippi e si è laureato al Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College nel 1910.

Per 38 anni nella forze armate americane ha raggiunto il grado di generale di brigata ed ha partecipato ad entrambe le guerre mondiali.
Prigioniero dei giapponesi per tre anni, ha girato 9 campi di prigionia ed ha partecipato alla marcia della morte di Baatan.
Conferenziere, poeta e scrittore descrisse nelle sue opere quanto il bridge lo aiutò a superare le traversie della prigionia e continuò a giocare un paio di volte la settimana per tutta la vita.
Scomparve il 5 marzo del 1965 a Marietta in Georgia.

and graduated from the Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1910.
In 1914 he married Frances Kelly.
For 38 years in the American armed forces he reached the rank of brigadier general and participated in both world wars.
Prisoner of the Japanese for three years, he shot 9 prison camps and participated in the march of Baatan's death.
Lecturer, poet and writer described in his works how much the bridge helped him to overcome the travails of imprisonment and continued to play a couple of times a week for a lifetime.
He disappeared on March 5, 1965 in Marietta, Georgia.
