Patrick  BRUEL

Patrick Bruel, pseudonimo di Maurice Benguigui (Tlemcen, 14 maggio 1959), è un cantante, attore e giocatore di poker francese.

Nasce in Algeria in una famiglia di origine ebraica, al tempo ancora colonia francese.

Nel 1962, dopo la dichiarazione di indipendenza dell'Algeria, la sua famiglia è costretta, come quasi tutti i "Pieds-noirs" (come venivano allora chiamati i coloni francesi) a lasciare il paese, del quale non conserva che pochi ricordi. Patrick e sua madre, che nel frattempo si era separata dal padre, si trasferiscono ad Argenteuil, nella periferia parigina.

 Oltre che nella musica, Patrick Benguigui è molto dotato nel giocare a calcio. La sua bravura è tale che a 15 anni gli viene proposto di partecipare ad un corso in un centro di formazione calcistica. Ma il parere contrario della madre non gli permette di intraprendere la carriera sportiva.

 Patrick Benguigui si lancia nel teatro, che abbandona però dopo appena due ore di corso di arte drammatica. Messosi alla ricerca di un lavoretto, trova posto come animatore al Club Méditerranée, e qui prende confidenza con la scena.

 Negli anni dal '78 all'84 gira i suoi primi film.

 Nel 1984 arriva il grande successo internazionale, con Marre de cette nana, scritta da Gérard Presgurvic. L'anno è caratterizzato anche dal suo primo passaggio televisivo nel programma La Chance aux chansons di Pascal Sevran. Un anno dopo, Patrick Bruel lavora con Fabrice Luchini sul set di P.R.O.F.S, che avrà un gran successo al botteghino.

 Nel 1986, esce il suo primo album. Nonostante un relativo successo, il disco gli vale l'onore di cantare all'Olympia di Parigi. Poco tempo dopo il pubblico lo ritrova nei film Una storia dei nostri giorni di Claude Lelouch, poi nel ruolo di un soldato ferito in La Maison assassinée di Georges Lautner.

 Patrick Bruel fa uscire un nuovo album nel 1989: Alors regarde. Un successo immenso, grazie a titoli divenuti celebri quali Casser la voix o Place des grands hommes. In quell'anno recita anche in due film: Due contro tutto e Forza maggiore.

 Gli anni novanta arrivano e Patrick Bruel diventa un vero fenomeno mediatico. Adorato dalle folle, in particolare dal pubblico femminile. È l'inizio della Bruelmania.

 Appassionato di poker, partecipa regolarmente alle competizioni. È anche diventato l'icona francese di questo gioco grazie al DVD "Poker Coach" nel quale ne spiega i fondamentali e dà consigli per imparare a giocare.

Nel 2004 sposa la sua compagna Amanda Sthers che gli darà un secondo figlio e da cui si separerà tre anni più tardi.

Patrick si diletta anche con il bridge che per sua esplicita ammissione "non è male".

Patrick is the son of Pierre Benguigui and Augusta Kammoun, daughter of Elie and Céline ben Sidoun.

His family became French in 1870 when the Crémieux Decree granted full French citizenship to the indigenous Jews of Algeria.

Although Bruel aspired to be a football star in his youth, he decided to pursue singing after seeing Michel Sardou in 1975. His first success came as an actor, however, in 1979's Le Coup de sirocco. He continued acting in films, on television and in the theater while pursuing his singing career. His first single, "Vide" ("Empty"), released in 1982, was not a success, but the follow-up, "Marre de cette nana-là" ("Fed up with that chick"), was a hit.
In 2003, he had his last name officially changed to Bruel-Benguigui, his stage name with his birthname, before his partner, the writer and playwright Amanda Sthers, gave birth to his first child, Oscar, on 19 August. On 21 September 2004, he wed the 24-year-old Sthers; it is his first marriage. His second child, Léon was born on 28 September 2005. The couple separated in 2007.

As of 2004 Bruel has acted in more than 40 different television and film productions and made five studio albums and several live albums. In 2002 Bruel released Entre Deux, a double CD of classic chanson that features duets with Charles Aznavour, Jean-Louis Aubert, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Alain Souchon and Renaud, among others. It sold two million copies and made Bruel France's best paid singer of the year. At the beginning of 2005, in response to the South Asian tsunami of 26 December 2004, Bruel wrote the song "Et puis la terre" to benefit the Red Cross. His latest album "Des souvenir devant" was his 4th charttopper in France.

In addition to acting and singing, Bruel is a world class professional poker player. He won a World Series of Poker bracelet in 1998 for the $5,000 Limit Hold'em event. As of 2009 he has earned more than $900,000 in live tournament play.
His 10 cashes at the WSOP account for $411,659 of those winnings. He also comments the World Poker Tour in his home country.
