William Henry Gates, meglio noto come Bill Gates è nato a Seattle il 28 ottobre del 1955.

Fondatore ed ex Presidente del colosso informatico Microsoft, Bill è anche un grande amante del Bridge che ha più volte partecipato da giocatore a molte importanti manifestazioni, Campionati del Mondo compresi.

 Assieme ad altri tre studenti di una scuola privata di Lakeside che diverranno anch'essi famosi: Paul Allen, Rik Weiland e Kent Evans, Bill Gates vide per la prima volta un computer quando aveva 13 anni.

 Fu un amore totalizzante a prima vista, tutto fu trascurato per imparare ad usare il DEC PD-11 che la Computer Centre aveva affittato per un certo numero di ore alla sua scuola e alla fine del 1968 i 4 fondarono la "Lakeside Programmers Group" e trovarono il modo di penetrare il sistema operativo del nuovo PD-12 che la scuola aveva messo a disposizione degli studenti per usarlo a tempo illimitato senza che questo apparisse!

 La Computer Center Corporation che aveva affittato il computer alla scuola se ne accorse e li fece bandire per qualche settimane, ma, qualche tempo dopo si avvalse dei loro servigi per trovare le debolezze del suo sistema in cambio di un uso illimitato del computer.

 Nell'estate del 1974, Bill lasciò Harvard dove si era iscritto alle Facoltà di Legge e di Matematica e convinse Paul a spostarsi altrove per dar seguito ai loro progetti. Entrambi furono assunti alla Honeywell e nel'aprile del 1975 diedero vita al loro sogno fondando la Microsoft.

Nel 1977 Gates viene arrestato per guida spericolata senza patente nel deserto del New Mexico mentre era al volante della sua Porsche 911 e, nel corso dello stesso anno, subisce un secondo arresto per futili motivi.

Finito il tempo delle ragazzate, all'età di 24 anni, Bill sposta la Microsoft a Seattle e dà inizio alla favola che tutti conoscete.

Nel 1994 Bill sposa Melinda French, una dirigente delle vendite della sua Società, che gli darà tre figli: Jennifer Katherine del 1966, Rory John nel 1999 e Phoebe Adele nel 2002.

Assieme alla moglie nel 2000, Gates fonda la Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, una organizzazione umanitaria benefica che diventerà una delle più munifiche del mondo.

A giugno del 2008, dopo 33 anni di Presidenza Bill lascia la Microsoft cedendo lo scettro del comando dell'impero informatico a Steve Ballmer per dedicarsi completamente alla Fondazione ed ai suoi hobbies.

Per una donazione di un milione di dollari a favore dell'ACBL nel 2010 è stato eletto personaggio dell'anno assieme a Warren Buffet.

Nel 2017 ha vinto il suo primo campionato nazionale in quel di Kansas City.

He is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest overall from 1995 to 2009, excluding 2008, when he was ranked third.

During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest individual shareholder with more than 8 percent of the common stock. 

He has also authored or co-authored several books.

Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. Although he is admired by many, a number of industry insiders criticize his business tactics, which they consider anti-competitive, an opinion which has in some cases been upheld by the courts (see Criticism of Microsoft).

In the later stages of his career, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000.

Bill Gates stepped down as chief executive officer of Microsoft in January 2000. He remained as chairman and created the position of chief software architect. In June 2006, Gates announced that he would be transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 

He gradually transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie, chief software architect and Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer. Gates' last full-time day at Microsoft was June 27, 2008. He remains at Microsoft as non-executive chairman.

Bill is also an avid Bridge player has frequently participated in many important events, including World Championships.

For a donation of one million dollars for ACBL in 2010 was elected person of the year along with Warren Buffet.

In 2017 he won his first national championship playing in Kansas City.

Il est devenu, grâce au succès commercial de Microsoft, l'homme le plus riche du monde de 1196 à 2007 et en 2009. En 2010 sa fortune personnelle est estimée à 53 milliards de dollars. 

Il est également Chevalier de l'Empire Britannique. 

Bill Gates a quitté Microsoft le 27 juin 2008 pour se consacrer à sa fondation humanitaire.

Le projet de loi est aussi un passionné de Bridge a souvent participé en tant que joueur dans de nombreux événements importants, y compris les championnats du monde.

Pour un don de un million de dollars pour dell'ACBL en 2010 a été élu personnalité de l'année avec Warren Buffet.
