Max Hardy nacque il 30 settembre del 1932 ad Alva nello Stato dell'Oklahoma, ed era figlio di un professore di musica. Seguì le orme paterne laureandosi alla Università di Roosevelt di Chicago e inizio la sua carriera di baritono e di insegnante di musica, fin quando dopo aver partecipato alla guerra di Corea, l'amore per il Bridge non lo assorbì completamente.
Giocatore professionista e rinomato Direttore di Torneo, ha scritto 13 libri e, pur avendo vinto oltre 100 titoli regionali molti dei quali in coppia con la moglie Mary, non è mai riuscito a iscrivere il suon nome in un NABC's.
Mary che gli ha dato il figlio Ben, è stata anche lei ottima giocatrice e valente insegnante.
Scomparso il 10 novembre del 2002 a Las Vegas
dopo una lunga battaglia con il cancro, nel 2013 è stato eletto postumo nella
Hall of Fame del Bridge
americano. He
played professionally and worked as a tournament director for more than 40 years.
He wrote 13 books, including several on the 2/1 
Hardy, the son of a college music professor, studied music for a
time but fell in love with bridge and devoted himself to the game.
His first book, Five-Card Majors – Western Style was advanced for its time and a precursor to the 2/1 books.
Hardy never won a North American championships, but he won more than 200 regional events, most in the era before fighting, stratification and bracketed knockouts. At the time of his death in
November 2002, Hardy had accumulated more than 10,000 masterpoints.
Many of his successes at bridge were in partnership with his wife, Mary.
The Blackwood Award will go to Hardy posthumously in 2013.
