Femke è nata a Schiedam ed ora vive a Nieuw-Vennep con il marito Ricco van Proojen, anche lui campione di caratura internazionale. Hanno tre figli.
Ha studiato Matematica all'Università di Delft e lavora come ricercatrice scientifica presso il Ministero della Difesa olandese.
Femke ha imparato il bridge alla giovane età di 12 anni e già nel 1996 ha vinto i Campionati Universitari Europei a Squadre.
Nel settembre del 2000 ha formato un tandem con Wietske van Zwol che a detta di molti analisti farà molto parlare di se.
Ha conquistato l'argento nei Campionati Europei Femminili a Squadre di Tenerife nel 2001, in quelli di Mentone nel 2003 e di Malmoe del 2004, è invece arrivata all'oro in quelli di Salsomaggiore del 2002.

Femke has learned bridge at the young age of 12 years and already in 1966 she won the European University Championships Team.
She won three medals silver at the European Women Teams Championships: in Tenerife in 2001, in Menton 2003 and in Malmoe 2004. Finally, she won gold medal in Salsomaggiore in 2002.
