Nato nel 1922 a Valdemarsvik, una cittadina circa 200km a sud di Stoccolma che si affaccia sul profondo omonimo fiordo, soprannominato "il Barone" per i suoi modi misurati e signorili, è stato uno dei più grandi calciatori europei e un allenatore di successo che ha fatto dell'Italia il suo Paese d'adozione.
Dopo sette stagioni disputate in Svezia si trasferì al Milan dove, perno del famoso trio Gre-No-Li contribuì ai successi dello squadrone rossonero nel quale rimase fino al ritiro agonistico avvenuto nel 1961, totalizzando 359 presenze e 81 reti.
Da calciatore ha vinto 4 Scudetti e 2 Coppe Latine giocando in Italia, le Olimpiadi del 1948 e la medaglia d'argento ai Mondiali del 1958, giocando nelle fila della squadra svedese.
Come allenatore ha guidato, oltre allo stesso Milan, Verona, Monza, Varese, Fiorentina e Roma, vincendo due scudetti (con il Milan nel 1979 e con la Roma nel 1983).
Appassionato di Bridge, aveva appreso il gioco dal suo allenatore svedese che lo usava per spiegare le tattiche di gioco e quando arrivò in Italia insegnò a praticarlo a diversi personaggi del mondo sportivo.
Trapiantatosi in Italia, aveva acquistato un'azienda vinicola a Cuccaro nel Monferrato, paesino dove si è spento nel 2007.

was a Swedish football midfielder and coach.
Il Barone (The Baron), as he is affectionately known in Italy, was renowned for being part of Sweden's "Gre-No-Li" trio of strikers along with Gunnar Gren and Gunnar Nordahl at A.C. Milan and the Swedish national team.
As a coach, he was in charge of several teams in Italy, managing for nearly four decades.
At the end of the 20th century Liedholm was voted the best Swedish player of the millennium by the readers of Swedens largest newspaper Aftonbladet.
After he retired from playing, Liedholm enjoyed some time in the backrooms at Milan, before getting promotion for both Verona and then Varese. This brought him to the attention of and then Milan, where he finally took control of the first team. He guided them to their tenth league title in 1979 before moving on to become the manager of Roma. Leading talents such as Paulo Roberto Falcão and Bruno Conti, he took them to their second league title ever in 1983 using the zonal marking system, which was unusual in Italy at the time. A year later, his Roma side lost on penalties to Liverpool in the European Cup Final. He also won the Coppa Italia three times with Roma, in 1981, 1983 and 1984.
As well as saying that the modern game is much more frantic and fast-paced than when he was involved, Liedholm, always a professional, also observed that "they [players] do not do much to avoid fouling players... It is too easy to stop a player by fouling him. Proper training teaches you how to win the ball without committing a foul, which is much more difficult.
After leaving the game (but still living in Italy), Liedholm ran a vineyard for a while together with his son Carlo.
Bridge enthusiast, he learned the game from his Swedish coach who used to explain the tactics and when he arrived in Italy taught to practice it in different characters of the sporting world.
He died on 5 November 2007 in his home in Cuccaro Monferrato, Province of Alessandria.

Liedholm évolue pendant douze saisons comme milieu offensif pour le Milan AC et fait partie de l'équipe de Suède qui dispute la finale de la coupe du monde de football de 1958. Il réalise par la suite une carrière d'entraîneur, principalement avec le Milan AC et l'AS Rome.
Liedholm reste au Milan AC après sa retraite sportive et y entame sa reconversion. Il y dirige l'équipe première de 1964 à 1966. Deuxième du championnat la première année, il n'achève sa deuxième saison qu'au septième rang. Il entame alors une longue carrière à travers le pays. Il prend d'abord en charge des équipes de second plan, avant de revenir entraîner à plusieurs reprises des équipes majeures comme AC Fiorentina, AS Rome et Milan AC.
Il remporte son premier titre de champion d'Italie en 1979, avec Milan AC, avant de signer à l'AS Rome avec laquelle il gagne le « scudetto » en 1983 et trois coupes d'Italie (en 1980, 1981 et 1984). En , il mène les Romains en finale de Coupe des clubs champions européens, perdue contre les Anglais de Liverpool FC aux tirs au but (1-1, 4-2 tab). Liedholm se fait alors remarquer en faisant pratiquer à son équipe u, ce qui était inhabituel en Italie.
Dans les années 1990, il assure de brefs interims à la tête du et de l'AS Rome, avant de prendre définitivement sa retraite en 1997, à 75 ans. Il décède en 2007 à Cuccaro Monferrato, en Italie.
Amateur de Bridge, il a appris le jeu de son entraîneur suédois qui sert à expliquer la tactique et quand il est arrivé en Italie a appris à la pratiquer dans les différents personnages du monde du sport.

12 Monate nach seinem Abschied als Spieler leitete Nils Liedholm 1963 erstmals verantwortlich das Training der Milan-Profis, und das für die nächsten drei Jahre. Von 1966 bis 1968 arbeitete er bei Hellas Verona und führte sie in die Serie A. Es folgten Engagements bei AC Monza (1968/69), Varese FC (1969–1971; Aufstieg in die Serie A) und AC Florenz (1971–1973).
Die wirklich erfolgreichen Jahren in der neuen Funktion neben dem Spielfeld folgten erst jetzt, und sie waren gekennzeichnet durch den Wechsel zwischen nur zwei Klubs: von 1973 bis 1977 trainierte Liedholm die , kehrte danach zum AC Mailand zurück und gewann dort 1979 auch seinen ersten Meistertitel als Trainer. Von 1979 bis 1984 profitierte wiederum die Roma von seinen Fähigkeiten, der er ebenfalls zur Meisterschaft sowie zu drei Pokaltiteln verhalf und die er 1984 bis ins Endspiel des europäischen Meisterpokals führte. Anschließend war bis 1987 erneut der AC Mailand, dann bis 1989 wieder AS Rom sein Arbeitgeber. Dort beendete er, fast 67-jährig, seine über ein halbes Jahrhundert dauernde, höchst erfolgreiche Laufbahn im Fußballsport. 40 Jahre davon hatte der Schwede den Fußball in Italien maßgeblich geprägt, darunter 20 Jahre beim AC Mailand und 11 Jahre bei der AS Rom. Er setzte einen Meilenstein durch die Einführung der modernen Zonendeckung, die bis dahin in Italien ungebräuchlich war.
Ganz vom Fußball lassen konnte er danach freilich nicht: 1991/92 hat er bei Hellas Verona und 1996/97 auch noch einmal bei „seinem“ AC Milan ausgeholfen. Nils Liedholm besaß ein Weingut in der Nähe der Stadt Alessandria in der piemontesischen Provinz Asti, die Azienda Agricola Villa Boemia, das er gemeinsam mit seinem Sohn betrieb. Auch in dieser Hinsicht war der Schwede ein echter Italiener geworden.
1999 gab die schwedische Post eine Briefmarke mit Liedholms Konterfei heraus.
Bridge-Enthusiasten, lernte er das Spiel von seinem schwedischen Trainer, der die Taktik erklären verwendet und wenn er in Italien angekommen gelehrt, um es in verschiedenen Charaktere der Welt des Sports Praxis.
