Walter  LOWEN

 Wladislaw  Loewenherz nacque a Vienna nel 1916, ma fu costretto dagli eventi bellici a rifugiarsi in Polonia dove studiò medicina a Leopoli che allora faceva parte della Polonia ed oggi è in Ucraina.

 Medico radiologo, Walter è anche stato un virtuoso del ping pong, partecipando ai Mondiali per la Polonia nel 1935 e vincendo il titolo australiano nel 1948.

 Nel 1939, presagendo la follia nazista si imbarcò per l'Australia e durante il viaggio conobbe la moglie Sima, che gli sarebbe rimasta al fianco per oltre 70 anni e che gli ha dato i loro tre figli.

 Walter è stato anche un ottimo bridgista che è arrivato a vincere i Campionati a Coppie Australiani e si è molto impegnato assieme alla moglie anche nell'amministrazione delle cose bridgistiche, ricoprendo anche la carica di Presidente della Victoria Bridge Association per 4 anni.

 Walter si è spento a Melbourne all'inizio del 2011. 

  Born Wladislaw  Loewenherz (1916 - 2011) in Vienna, Walter Lowen studied medicine in Lvov, Poland, then emigrated to Australia in 1939. On the boat, he met his future wife Sima, and the two enjoyed almost 70 years of marriage. Sima and Walter joined the VBA in the 1960s and were wonderful contributors to the club over many decades.

In the early days, Walter played with Victor Muntz, and represented Victoria on several occasions at the ANC, most notably in 1972, when he won the Open teams event.  Walter was also active in bridge administration, and served four years as President of the VBA, from 1981 to 1984. 

As well as being a doctor, radiologist and fine bridge player, Walter was also a gifted  sportsman – junior table tennis champion and Poland’s representative in the 1935  World Championships in London. He continued with his table tennis in Australia, winning the Australian title in 1948, as well as numerous State titles. 

He was inducted to the Table Tennis Victoria Hall of Fame and the Maccabi Hall of Fame.
