Géza Maròczy nacque il 3 marzo del 1870 a Seghedino e fu uno dei più grandi scacchisti ungheresi.
Ingegnere, professore di matematica e maestro di scacchi, fu l'ideatore della variante Maròczy.
Prima dei 40 anni abbandonò gli scacchi per dedicarsi al suo lavoro di revisore contabile assicurativo.
Tornò agli scacchi nel dopoguerra e nel 1950 la FIDE lo insignì del titolo di gran maestro.
Quando si trasferì in Inghilterra fu insegnante di scacchi presso l'Hasting's Chess Club.
Fu campione olimpico a squadre nel 1927 e come molti altri scacchisti non disdegnò di misurarsi anche al tavolo da bridge.
Scomparve a Budapest il 29 maggio del 1951.
Géza Maròczy was born on 3rd March 1870 in Szeged and was
one of the greatest Hungarian chess players.
Engineer, professor of mathematics and chess master, he was the creator of the Maròczy variant.
Before the age of 40 he abandoned chess to devote himself to his work as an insurance auditor.
He returned to chess in the post-war period and in 1950 FIDE gave him the title of Grand Master.
When he moved to England he was a chess teacher at the Hasting's Chess Club.
He was an Olympic team champion in 1927 and like many other chess players he did not disdain to even measure himself at the bridge table.
He disappeared in Budapest on May 29, 1951.
