Born in 1920 in Plymouth, N.C., Mary Martin Jones grew up in Chapel Hill, which led her to become a lifelong supporter of the University of North Carolina Tarheels. She later moved to Wrightsville Beach, N.C., and met her first husband, Walter Martin, who was in the Army, at a dance at Fort Fisher.
It was bridge that Jones loved most. She hosted parties at her Winter Park home, competed in tournaments and earned the distinction of Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League.
The two married in 1944 and had two children, Suzanne Newkirk of Winter Park and Dave Martin of Leesburg, Va. Her husband became a career Army officer, and the family moved across the country and around the world, living in Japan, Germany, Georgia, Texas, Virginia and Alabama.
It was in Japan that Jones' husband taught her to play bridge. The game was her "portable avocation," Dave Martin said. Newkirk added that the popularity of bridge, especially among Army wives, ensured that she had a partner "everywhere she went."
Jones, of Winter Park, died Sunday. She was 90.
