Richard Avery Miller, nacque il 5 gennaio del 1911 a York in Pennsylvania e si spense il 1 marzo del 1983 a Clearwater in Florida.

Personalità di rilievo del bridge americano, partecipò al Consiglio Direttivo dell'ACBL e si rese noto a molti giocatori per l'invenzione del Contro Competitivo.

Valente giocatore, si distinse soprattutto come articolista, teorico e scrittore di bridge (Bridge Brilliance & Blunders).

Fu uno dei primi a teorizzare l'apertura variabile mediante la Regola dell'11, 12 e 13.
