Jessie NEWTON

 

 Jessie Newton è nata il 4 aprile del 1922 a Oxenhope  nello Yorkshire con il cognome Bolton e dopo aver frequentato la grammar school di Keighley, ottenne un posto come ispettrice delle tasse a Leeds.

 Durante la guerra fu trasferita a Cardiff dove incontrò il futuro marito Hubert Newton che la introdusse al bridge che diventò una parte importante della sua vita.

 Come giocatrice ha vinto più volte tutte le competizioni nazionali del Galles, spesso giocando in coppia con il marito, ed ha anche fatto parte della nazionale femminile inglese.

 La figlia Jean Newton fu accomunata alla passione di famiglia e Jessie ottenne dei titoli nazionali anche giocando in coppia con lei.

 Dopo aver militato a lungo nel bridge amministrativo locale, divenne segretaria della BBL e istituì molto validamente la difesa contro le accuse mosse al famoso duo Schapiro-Reese, tanto da essere chiamata a rappresentare la federazione britanniche in seno alle riunioni EBL.

É stata la prima presidente donna della BBL.

Nonostante tutte queste attività, si è laureata ed ha insegnato matematica e storia in una scuola di Oswestry.

Trasferitasi a Worcester divenne per oltre trenta anni la sostenitrice più accesa del bridge locale e vinse il suo ultimo trofeo, il Worcestershire Rubber Bridge, quando aveva la veneranda età di 95 anni!

Morì nel maggio del 2020 stroncata dal Covid-19.

Jessie Newton was born on April 4, 1922 in Oxenhope in Yorkshire with the surname Bolton and after attending Keighley's grammar school, she got a job as a tax inspector in Leeds.

During the war she was transferred to Cardiff where she met her future husband Hubert Newton who introduced her to bridge which became an important part of her life.

As a player she has won all the national competitions of Wales several times, often playing in tandem with her husband, and has also been part of the English women's national team.

Her daughter Jean Newton was united in the family passion and Jessie also obtained national titles by playing in tandem with her.

After having played for a long time in the local administrative bridge, she became secretary of the BBL and instituted a very valid defense against the accusations made against the famous duo Schapiro-Reese, so much so as to be called to represent the British federation in the EBL meetings.

She was the first female president of the BBL.

Despite all these activities, she graduated and taught math and history in an Oswestry school.

After moving to Worcester she became the strongest supporter of the local bridge for over thirty years and won her last trophy, the Worcestershire Rubber Bridge, when she was 95 years old!

He died in May 2020 struck down by Covid-19.
