Melvin J. Welles (nato Welitoff) è nato il 29 novembre del 1918 a Jersey City  da padre immigrato russo e da madre americana, rimasto orfano quando aveva 9 anni, la madre si risposò due anni più tardi e lui finì in collegio alla Irving School di Tarrytown dove si diplomò.

 Ha studiato legge a Rutgers e si è sposato a Filadelfia con Dorothy che era una dietista che gli diede una figlia che morì in un incendio in California nel 1979.

 Ha servito nell'intelligence durante la seconda guerra mondiale.

 Amante del bridge, che ha praticato con i nonni da quando aveva 6 anni, è stato un giocatore di buon livello raggiungendo il titolo di ACBL Life Master.

 Melvin è anche stato un grande tifoso di baseball ed è particolarmente noto per aver condotto i negoziati durante il grande sciopero dei giocatori del 1981, amava anche il poker.

 È scomparso nella sua casa di Alexandria il 28 gennaio del 2009.

Melvin J. Welles (born Welitoff) was born on November 29, 1918 in Jersey City to a Russian immigrant father and an American mother, who was orphaned when he was 9, his mother remarried two years later and he went to boarding school at Irving School of Tarrytown where he graduated.

He studied law at Rutgers and married in Philadelphia to Dorothy who was a dietician who gave him a daughter who died in a fire in California in 1979.

He served in intelligence during World War II.

Lover of bridge, who has practiced with his grandparents since he was 6, he was a good player reaching the title of ACBL Life Master.

Melvin was also a huge baseball fan and is particularly known for leading the negotiations during the great 1981 players strike, he also loved poker.

He disappeared at his home in Alexandria on January 28, 2009.
