In alternanza con le Universiadi estive e invernali, vengono organizzati ogni anno pari a partire dal 2000
A differenza delle Universiadi, i Campionati Mondiali Universitari sono singoli eventi sportivi, la cui organizzazione è delegata ad una Federazione Nazionale Sportiva Universitaria (NUSF), e quindi ad una città e ad un Comitato Organizzatore.
Organizzare un Campionato Mondiale Universitario offre a una città, e spesso a un'università, la possibilità di ospitare un grande evento sportivo internazionale senza essere una città grande e ricca.
Il processo di attribuzione dei WUC FISU inizia con un bando di candidatura.
I NUSF candidati sono tenuti a fornire un dossier di gara esaminato dal Comitato Esecutivo FISU, che dopo delibera attribuisce il WUC al NUSF e alla città prescelti.

Unlike the Universiade, the World University Championships are single sport events, the organisation of which is delegated to a National University Sports Federation (NUSF), and then to a city and an Organising Committee. Organising a World University Championship gives a city, and often a university, a chance to host an international major sporting event without being a big and rich city. The attribution process of the FISU WUCs starts with a call for candidature.
Candidate NUSFs are required to provide a bidding dossier examined by the FISU Executive Committee, which after deliberation attributes the WUC to the chosen NUSF and city.
