Quando il 30 marzo 2008 Evan Bailey è scomparso a causa di un raro carcinoma, ha lasciato in cordoglio l'intera comunità bridgistica dell'area di San Diego.
Evan che in vita guadagnò oltre 15.000 master points, come giocatore vide i suoi massimi traguardi nel Silodor del 1995 e nel Senior Swiss Teams del 2003.
Fu però un rilevante teorico, inventore delle Sottoaperture Bailey e un superbo insegnante.
Evan, che era nato il 12 maggio del 1929, era un fisico che aveva lavorato nella ricerca in campo governativo fino al momento del suo pensionamento e che si era laureato alla Stanford University e si era guadagnato un dottorato all'Università di Berkeley.
Sposato con Doris aveva 10 figli.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and a doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley.
Married to Doris, they had 10 children.
He was a Grand Life Master with more than 15.000 master points.
He won two North American titles: the Silodor in 1995 and the Senior Swiss teams in 2003.
He invented the Bailey two-bids, a specialized type of weak two-bid popular on the West coast.
He was also a superb teacher and a bid innovator.
