Franz Baratta è nato in Cecoslovacchia nel 1935 ma è diventato poi cittadino austriaco e manager di una grande azienda viennese.
World International Master e Senior International Master, ha difeso i colori della sua Nazione di adozione per molti anni, diventando uno dei migliori giocatori austriaci e cogliendo le sue più importanti affermazioni nella Categoria Seniores dove è stato Campione del Mondo a Squadre in due Olimpiadi consecutive (Albuquerque 1994 e Lille 1998).
In coppia con Karl Rohan ha vinto tre volte il bronzo nei Campionati Seniores a Coppie una volta ai Mondiali nel 1990 e due agli Europei nel 1991 e 1995.
Nella Categoria Open la sua miglior affermazione è nel bronzo vinto agli Europei a Squadre di Oslo del 1969.
Giocatore di riferimento del bridge austriaco, ha guidato da capitano non giocatore le nazionali che hanno vinto il Campionato Europeo del 1985, l'argento alla Bermuda dello stesso anno e alle Olimpiadi del 1988.

World International Master and Senior Master International, defended the colors of his country of adoption for many years, becoming one of the best Austrian players and picking his most important results in the senior category where he was World Champion Team in two consecutive Olympiads (Albuquerque 1994 and Lille 1998).
Paired with Karl Rohan has won three bronze medal in the Senior Pairs Championship at the World Cup once (1990) and two to the Europeans Teams Championships (1991 and 1995).
In the Open category his best result has been a bronze medal at the European Team in Oslo (1969).
Player of the reference for the Austrian bridge, he has led how the non-playing captain the national team who won the gold medal at European Championship of the 1985 and, in the same year, the silver medal at Bermuda Island at the Olympiads of the 1988.
