Hermine  BARON

 Hermine Baron è nata ad Omaha il primo di novembre del 1912 ed è stata costretta ad usare le stampelle  a causa della poliomielite che la colpì all'età di 11 anni e che dal 1986 l'ha costretta su una sedia a rotelle.

 Sposata con Arthur Baron dal 1954 al 1958 è deceduta a causa di un cancro il 27 settembre del 1996 a Los Angeles, dove viveva.

 Hermine è stata una delle più forti giocatrici nazionali americane ed è quella che, nella sua Categoria, ha conquistato il maggior numero di Master Point di ogni tempo (precisamente 22.645!) vincendo oltre 100 tornei regionali e guadagnandosi il titolo di Grand Life Master.

 Ha rappresentato più volte la nazionale USA e ha vinto 6 NABC's ed un centinaio di eventi  Regionali coronando la sua carriera internazionale con il bronzo conquistato alle Olimpiadi a Squadre del 1968.

 Sul piano Nazionale ha vinto anche 7 NABC tra i quali ricordiamo il Whitehead nel 1968 e 1982.

 La ACBL le ha concesso l'onore di entrare nella Hall of Fame nel 2002 a sei anni dalla sua scomparsa avvenuta il 27 settembre del 1996 ad Hollywood.

Hermine Baron (1912 - 1996), a native of Omaha , contracted polio at the age of 11. She underwent lengthy rehabilitation in Warm Springs GA but had to use crutches or a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

Baron moved to Southern California in the mid-Forties and took up duplicate at the urging of Arthur Baron, to whom she was married from 1954 to 1958. Once she discovered duplicate, she was hooked. She became an inveterate player and a perennial winner. At the time of her death in 1996, Baron had won more than 22,600 masterpoints and the McKenney Trophy (now the Barry Crane Top 500) in 1964 and 1970.

Baron won seven North American championships and more than 100 regional events. Most of her major titles were in women’s events, but in 1966 she and Meyer Schleifer won the Life Master Pairs, the six-session event contested for the von Zedtwitz Gold Cup.

Baron also represented the United States in world competition in 1968 and 1978.

She accomplished all this while playing from a wheelchair in the days before handicap-access restrooms and ramps.

Among her partners through the years were Soloway, Mike Lawrence, Mike Passell and Mike Shuman.
