Nato a South Dennis nel Massachusetts nel 1892 e spentosi nel 1970, Dudley Courtenay è stata una delle figure più rappresentative del bridge internazionale degli anni trenta dello scorso secolo.
Ha fatto parte del team che tentò di opporre allo strapotere di Culbertson il "Sistema Ufficiale", assai noto per il suo metodo di conto delle perdenti che viene ancor oggi usato da molti giocatori.
Dudley, che espose il suo metodo di valutazione della mano nel libro cult "The System of Expert Play", è stato anche il produttore dei primi astucci metallici per duplicato.

1970, was one of the most representative figures of the international bridge of
the thirties of last century.
He was a member of the team that tried to oppose the excessive power of Ely Culbertson across them "System Official", well known for his method of account of the losers that is still used by many players.
