Doug Drury nacque in Canada nel 1914 dove ha lavorato nel campo delle assicurazioni e dove, nella città di Toronto, ha sviluppato le sue qualità di buon giocatore.
Nel 1950 Doug si trasferì nella cittadina di Sebastopol negli Stati Uniti, un piccolo centro della California vicinissimo a Santa Rosa che si trova circa cento chilometri a Nord di San Francisco e lì aprì un circolo di bridge nel quale sviluppò anche la sua attività di insegnante.
Abile amministratore, Drury lavorò per l'ACBL Board of Governor, specie nel Comitato Systems and Conventions.
Come giocatore ha vinto 3 NABC tra cui ricordiamo i due Wernher del 1954 e 1955.
Drury, che scomparve nel 1967, è noto a i bridgisti di tutto il mondo per aver ideato la convenzione che porta il suo nome.
