William "Bill" Hirst è nato nel 1933 nello Yorkshire.
Dal 1978 ha vissuto a Manchester dove ha lavorato in una compagnia assicurativa per poi ritirarsi nella Contea del Cheshire.
Sposato con Sheila hanno avuto due figli Andrew (anche lui buon giocatore) e Suzanne.
Ex giocatore di whist ha iniziato a giocare a bridge agli inizi degli anni '60 e 20 anni più tardi è diventato un appassionato di partita libera.
A livello nazionale ha vinto, tra l'altro, il Crockford nel 2000 e l'Hubert Phillips nel 1999 e nel 2003.
A livello internazionale ha guadagnato il bronzo nel 1981 ai Campionati del MEC a Coppie Juniores e nel 2004 negli IMSA a Coppie Open.
Sempre nei giochi IMSA, ha vinto l'oro nel 2004 nello Squadre Senior ed il bronzo nel Board-a-Point.
É scomparso il 5 gennaio del 2020 per le complicazioni susseguenti ad un ntervento al cervello.

Since 1978 he has lived in Manchester where he worked in an insurance company and then retired to the County of Cheshire.
Married to Sheila they had two children Andrew (also a good player) and Suzanne.
A former whist player, he started playing bridge in the early 60s and 20 years later he became a rubber enthusiast.
Nationally he won, among other things, Crockford in 2000 and Hubert Phillips in 1999 and 2003.
Internationally he gained bronze in 1981 at the MEC Junior Couples Championships
and in 2004 in the IMSA Open Couples.
Also in the IMSA games, he won gold in 2004 in the Senior Teams and bronze in
the Board-a-Point.
He disappeared on January 5, 2020 due to complications following brain surgery.
