Mike Hirst è nato nel 1936 a Castleford nello Yorkshire, una cittadina circa 30km. a SE di Leeds, ed è stato uno dei migliori giocatori Gallesi degli anni '60 e '70 che ha figurato per decenni ai primi posti della Classifica Nazionale.
Ha iniziato a giocare a bridge a 11 anni osservando i suoi familiari ed ha conquistato il suo primo piazzamento a 16, arrivando terzo nel Campionato a Coppie dello Yorkshire.
Da studente ha dedicato il suo tempo libero anche al rugby (suo nonno era il Presidente della squadra della sua cittadina).
Dopo gli studi la carriera professionale lo costrinse a giocare assai poco ed a trasferirsi a Penhart nel Galles del Sud.
Sposatosi nel 1975 con Ann Bernard, anche lei valente bridgista gallese, hanno vissuto a Pontefract una cittadina a sud di Leeds ed hanno avuto una figlia, Debi.
Nel 1993 conquistò il bronzo per la Gran Bretagna nei Seniores a Squadre del MEC e questo resta il suo maggior successo internazionale.
In campo nazionale ha conquistato per i colori del Galles numerose volte il Camrose, una specie di Intercampionato degli Stati della Gran Bretagna.
Era anche un abile golfista.
È scomparso il 29 ottobre del 2020.
Mike Hirst was born in 1936 in Castleford in Yorkshire, a town about 30km. SE of
Leeds, and was one of the best Welsh players of the 60s and 70s who figured at
the top of the National Ranking for decades.
He started playing bridge at 11 by observing his family and took his first place at 16, finishing third in the Yorkshire Pairs Championship.
As a student he also devoted his free time to rugby (his grandfather was the president of his town's team).
After his studies, his professional career forced him to play very little and to move to Penhart in South Wales.
Married in 1975 to Ann Bernard, also a talented Welsh bridge player, they lived in Pontefract a town south of Leeds and had a daughter, Debi.
In 1993 he won bronze for Great Britain in the Seniors Team of the MEC and this remains his greatest international success.
In the national field he has won the Camrose numerous times for the colours of Wales, a kind of Inter-championships of the States of Great Britain.
He was also a skilled golfer.
He passed away on October 29, 2020.
