Nato nel 1909, Joe Lazarus è stato uno dei giocatori che ha capitanato un quartetto che tra gli anni '40 e '50 ha dominato il bridge nell'Inghilterra del Nord e nell'area di Manchester in particolare.
Più tardi Joe si impose anche a livello nazionale vincendo più volte tutte le principali competizioni interbritanniche e rappresentò anche diverse volte la nazionale inglese.
Sul piano internazionale colse il suo miglior risultato vincendo il bronzo agli Europei a Squadre di Palermo nel 1959.
Lasciati il bridge agonistico restò un fortissimo giocatore di partita libera fino alla sua morte avvenuta nel maggio 1981.
Joe Lazarus (1909 - 1981) was the leader of quartet of
Manchester Bridge players, who, for over s decade, dominated the Northeern
Bridge scene and later achieved national prominent in the game.
In the national bridge scene, Lazarus and his partner Franks, won (in some instances several times) the Tollemache Cup, the Pachabo Cup, the Crockford's Cup and the Gold Cup. They represented England in several Camrose Matches and played for Great Britain with great distinction in the 1959 European Teams Championships, when GB finished third.
He was an excellent and conscientious captain and was a model of property and courtesy at the table.
In later years he gave up tournament bridge but remained a formidable rubber bridge player to the end of his days.
