Jerry Machlin è il nipote del grandissimo Al Sobel ed è stato uno dei più prestigiosi Direttori di Torneo degli Stati Uniti.
Nato nel 1913 e scomparso nel 1997, Jerry viveva a Silver Spring una cittadina del Maryland situata pochi chilometri a Nord di Washington.
Ha iniziato la carriera di arbitro sotto la spinta dello zio Al Sobel e si è distinto soprattutto nei Distretti di Virginia, Maryland, North e South Carolina.

Jerry si è anche distinto come articolista del Washington Bulletin e come autore della sua divertentissima raccolta di memorie "Tournament Bridge: An Uncensored Memoir".
Nel 2008 l'American Contract Bridge League gli ha concesso l'onore di far parte, assieme a suo zio, della prestigiosa Hall of Fame del bridge americano.
Gli è sopravvissuta fino alla fine del 2010 la moglie Geltrude (Trudy) che è stata anche lei uno dei più noti diretti di torneo e insegnanti americani e che gli ha dato 4 figli.
Nata nel 1918 e residente a Silver Spring aveva vinto nel 1976 il Mixed Pairs ai NABC's in coppia con il grande Kit Woolsey.
Direttore di riferimento dell'Area di Washington, insegnante accreditata, è stata anche per lunghi anni editrice della Mid-Atlantic, una rivista di bridge abbastanza nota sulla costa orientale degli USA.
One of the
all-time great tournament directors, Jerry Machlin was selected to receive the
Blackwood Award for 2008, but because of his ties to the Washington DC area, his
induction was held to the Summer NABC in 2009.
Machlin was a gifted story teller who penned numerous articles for the Washington Bridge League Bulletin. A collection of his best stories are contained in a book hailed as one of the best of all time, Tournament Bridge: An Uncensored Memoir.
The legendary TD helped lead an American bridge team in the first international bridge contest ever staged in China, in 1981. He directed special matches between Congress and Corporate America.
Upon retirement, Machlin started a new career as a player, which provided more material for his humorous writings. He delighted in telling of his misadventures.
His wife Gertrude (Trudy) was one of the best directors of American tournaments.
Born in 1918 and a resident of Silver Spring won the NABC Mixed Pairs of the 1976 to paired with the great Kit Woolsey.
Expert director especially in Area of Washington has been for many years editor of the Mid-Atlantic, a Bridge magazine enough famous in USA.
