Alexander Mc Call Smith è nato a Bulawayo nello Zimbabwe il 24 agosto del 1948 ed è uno scrittore ed un giurista britannico di origini scozzesi, rinomato esperto di diritto applicato alla medicina ed alla bioetica.
Prolifico scrittore è molto conosciuto per le sue opere letterarie ed in particolar modo per la serie di racconti con protagonista la detective Precious Ramotswe, responsabile della No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.
Cresciuto nello Zimbabwe, si è trasferito in Scozia per studiare diritto all'università di Edimburgo, laureatosi si è nuovamente trasferito nel continente nero dove ha insegnato legge all'università del Botswana, prima di rientrare definitivamente ad Edimburgo.
Sposato con Elisabeth, hanno avuto due figlie.
È stato presidente del comitato etico del British Medical Journal fino al 2002 e del Comitato internazionale di bioetica dell'UNESCO.
Appassionato musicista, suona il fagotto; è stato cofondatore della Really Terrible Orchestra di Edimburgo.
Solo in tarda età ha conosciuto il bridge e ne è rimasto affascinato tanto da scriverne sul British.
Alexander Mc Call Smith was
born in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe on August 24, 1948 and is a British-born writer and
jurist of Scottish descent, renowned expert in law applied to medicine and
bioethics.
Prolific writer is well known for his literary works and in particular for the series of short stories starring the detective Precious Ramotswe, head of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.
Raised in Zimbabwe, he moved to Scotland to study law at the University of Edinburgh, graduate he moved back to the black continent where he taught law at the University of Botswana, before returning permanently to Edinburgh.
Married to Elisabeth, they had two daughters.
He was chairman of the ethics committee of the British Medical Journal until 2002 and of the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee.
Passionate musician, he plays the bassoon; he was co-founder of the Really Terrible Orchestra of Edinburgh.
Only in late age he met bridge and was fascinated enough to write about it on the British.
