Erling Onsager nacque il 26 marzo del 1876 a Drammen una città circa 40 Km. a sud ovest di Oslo in una numerosa famiglia. Aveva 4 tra fratelli e sorelle.
Sposato con Ingrid Kirkeby (Holmestrand, 21 marzo 1880 - Monaco, 18 febbraio1961), ebbero due figli Knut Herz e Lars che vinse il Premio Nobel per la chimica nel 1968.
Avvocato e giudice della Corte Suprema Norvegese, fece più volte parte della squadra norvegese guadagnando il bronzo nei primi Campionati Europei a Squadre del 1932 e del 1933.
Una volta pensionato, si trasferì con la moglie nel Principato di Monaco, dove morì a Monaco nel 1952.
Erling Onsager was born on March 26, 1876 in Drammen a town
about 40 km. Southwest of Oslo in a large family. He had four between brothers and
sisters.
Married to Ingrid Kirkeby (Holmestrand, March 21, 1880 - Monaco, 18 febbraio1961), they had two sons Knut Herz and Lars who won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1968.
Lawyer and Judge of Supreme Norwegian Court, he was several times part of the Norwegian Team, earning bronze in the first European Teams Championships of 1932 and 1933.
Once retired, he moved to Principality of Monaco with his wife, where he died in Monaco in 1952.
