John Henry Onstott è nato il 27 dicembre del 1944 ed è originario di Oceanside in California ed oggi vive a New Orleans.
Dopo aver praticato il calcio ed il baseball al tempo del liceo, John ha cominciato ha giocare a bridge superati da poco i 20 anni e non ha mai smesso riuscendo a vincere tre NABC e due campionati mondiali nella categoria seniores: il Senior Bowl del 2001 e le Olimpiadi del 2004.
Sposato con Eleanor, la coppia ha avuto tre figli.
John, in campo nazionale ha anche guadagnato alcuni piazzamenti prestigiosi, ma il suo curriculum bridgistico è reso straordinario dai due titoli nazionali vinti nel 2016 e 2018, qualche anno dopo che un intervento al cervello e un successivo Parkinson, aveva fatto predire ai suoi medici che in futuro avrebbe dovuto limitarsi al bridge amatoriale.
John è scomparso il 28 giugno del 2023.

After practicing soccer and baseball at high school, John started playing bridge just over 20 years and has never stopped managing to win three NABCs and two world championships in the senior category: the 2001 Senior Bowl and the 2004 Olympics.
Married to Eleanor, he has three children.
John, in the national field, has also earned some prestigious placements, but his track record is made extraordinary by the two national titles won in 2016 and 2018, a few years after a brain surgery and a subsequent Parkinson, he had his doctors predict that in the future it should have been limited to the amateur bridge.
John is disappeared the 2023, June 28.
