Norman Squire nacque nel 1907 e fu uno dei guru del bridge britannico nell'immediato dopo guerra.
Poco noto in campo internazionale è stato un teorico di grande ingegno ed una delle colonne del gruppo di giocatori che propugnarono lo Baron System.
Fu l'inventore del IV Colore Forcing che ancor oggi impera sui tavoli di tutto il globo e scrisse numerosi libri di grande successo tra cui ricordiamo "Theory of Bidding", una specie di Bibbia per i giocatori inglesi del suo tempo.
Come giocatore vinse innumerevoli tornei tra cui ricordiamo 4 volte la Gold Cup (1946, 1953, 1954 e 1958) e tre volte la Crockford's Cup (1948, 1956 e 1957). Particolarmente significativa la vittoria nel De La Rue International Par Contest nel 1957.
In gioventù fu anche un discreto ballerino acrobatico che si esibiva al Coconut Grove.
Morì a Londra nel gennaio del 1991.
Norman Squire was born in 1907 and was one of the gurus of
the British bridge immediately after the war.
Little known in the international arena was a theorist of great talent and one of the columns of the group of players who advocated the Baron System.
He was the inventor of the Fourth Color Forcing that still reigns on the tables around the globe and wrote several best selling books including "Theory of Bidding", a kind of Bible for the English players of his time.
As a player he won countless tournaments among which the Gold Cup four times
(1946, 1953, 1954 and 1958) and three times the Crockford's Cup (1948, 1956 and
1957). Particularly significant the victory in De La Rue International Par
Contest in 1957.
In his youth he was also a good acrobatic dancer who performed at the
Coconut Grove.
He died in London in January 1991.
