John Paul Stevens è nato a Chicago il 20 aprile del 1920 da una famiglia di imprenditori di successo.

 A seguito delle traversie giudiziarie subite dal padre al tempo della grande depressione, John scelse la professione di giudice.

 Laureatosi presso l'Università di Chicago, si arruolò in marina giusto il giorno primo dell'attacco di Pearl Harbour e si guadagnò una stella di bronzo in qualità di crittografo.

 Dopo la guerra si iscrisse alla Northwestern University Law School conseguendo il più alto punteggio nella storia della scuola.

 Nominato alla Corte Suprema nel 1975 vi è rimasto per oltre 34 anni.

 Si sposò ed ebbe due figlie e dopo il suo pensionamento scrisse un paio di libri notevoli.

 Oltre che un giudice che ha fatto la storia, John fu un giocatore di bridge che frequentava regolarmente i bridge club.

 È scomparso a Fort Lauderdale a causa delle complicanze di un ictus il 16 luglio del 2019.

John Paul Stevens was born in Chicago on April 20, 1920 from a family of successful entrepreneurs.

Following the legal ordeals suffered by his father at the time of the Great Depression, John chose the profession of judge.

He graduated from the University of Chicago, enlisted in the navy just the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor and earned a bronze star as a cryptographer.

After the war he enrolled at Northwestern University Law School earning the highest score in the history of the school.

Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1975 he remained there for over 34 years.

He married and had two daughters and after his retirement he wrote a couple of remarkable books.

In addition to a judge who made history, John was a bridge player who regularly attended bridge clubs.

He disappeared in Fort Lauderdale due to complications of a stroke on 16 July 2019.
