Alan Williams è nato a Bristol nel 1947 ed è stato un manager di successo dell'informatica ed un talentuoso amministratore sia nel mondo degli scacchi, che in quello del bridge

Vice Presidente a vita della Bristol & District Chess League dopo esserne stato sia tesoriere che presidente, Presidente della English Bridge Union dal 1994 al 1997, aveva ideato un suo sistema di licitazione chiamato "Chilli".

Si sposò con Chrissie, una collega dei tempi dell'università e trasferitosi nel Buckinghamshire per motivi di lavoro, tornò nella sua Bristol subito dopo il pensionamento.

Divenuto Presidente del West of England Bridge Club mantenne questa carica finché non dovette separarsene nel 2019 a causa di una brutta malattia che lo portò alla morte il 3 febbraio del 2020.

Lifetime Vice President of the Bristol & District Chess League after being both treasurer and president, President of the English Bridge Union from 1994-1997, he had devised his own bidding system called "Chilli".

Married to Chrissie, a colleague from college days, he moved to Buckinghamshire for work reasons, but he returned to his Bristol immediately after his retirement.

After becoming President of the West of England Bridge Club, he held this position until he had to part with it in 2019 due to a bad illness that led to his death on February 3, 2020.
