Robert W. "Bob" Blanchard è nato nel 1951 nell'area di Cleveland e ha studiato presso il locale Case Western Reserve prima e presso la University of Oregon di Eugene poi.
Vive con la seconda moglie Lynn a New York ed è stato sposato in prime nozze con la campionessa mondiale Jillian Levin con la quale ha avuto due figli, Shane e Justin.

Nel 1975 è stato il giovane dell'anno per l'ACBL.
Molto presente sul circuito nazionale americano ha vinto il Blue Ribbon Pairs nel 1996 e il Mitchell nel 1997 ed ha anche rappresentato la nazionale del suo Paese in alcune occasioni.
Per molti anni ha fatto parte della sfera organizzativa dei Cavendish attraverso la World Bridge Production, Inc. di cui è stato uno dei fondatori.
È stato anche Presidente di più distretti ACBL ed ha praticato il tennis, lo sci d'acqua e la vela.
Il figlio maggiore Shane Blanchard, nato nel 1987, è un World Master che ha giocato spesso in coppia con il padre e con il fratello Justin Blanchard di un anno più piccolo (neanche a dirlo, anche lui ha iniziato a cimentarsi con il bridge) e che recentemente ha sposato la campionessa svedese Sandra Rimstedt.
Shane ha capitanato la squadra americana che ha vinto il bronzo nella Bermuda Bowl del 2015.
Robert W. (Bob) Blanchard was born in 1951. He is a
graduate of Case Western Reserve in Cleveland and the University of Oregon in
Eugene, and now runs a company that manufactures electromechanical devices.
He and his current wife, Lynn, live in New York City.
In the early 1980s he and his ex wife, World Champion Jill Levin, championed a well-publicized fight for Women's right in bridge.
Bob was the ACBL Rookie of the Year in 1975. He finished second in two NABC events in 1982 and then just missed out on his first NABC title again in 1989, finishing second in the Reisinger.
In 1991, he qualified to play in the US Team Trials. In 1996, he finally won his first North American championship—the Blue Ribbon pairs.
He has since added a second NABC title, the 1997 Open Board-a-Match Teams.
He has also represented the USA in international competition, finishing 13th in the 1986 Rosenblum Teams, and 17th in the same event four years later.
He has also enjoyed the Cavendish Invitational Pairs over the years, finishing third in 1984, fourth in 1982 and sixth in 1981.
He has for many years been involved with the organization of the Cavendish, which is by far the world’s largest cash-prize tournament.
Bob was Chairman of both ACBL Unit 128 and District 24 in 1992.
Away from the bridge table, he enjoys tennis, sailing, cooking and water-skiing.
His son Shane is a World Master who plays often paired with his father and the daughter Justin started to play also her.
Shane has been the npc of team USA winning the bronze medal in Bermuda Bowl 2015.
