Nicolas Courtel è nato nel 1966, vive a Tolosa ed è un informatico che lavora nel campo del controllo aereo civile. Sposato con Bénédicte, anche lei bridgista, hanno due figlie.
Apprese il bridge all'età di 13 anni per merito di un suo insegnante.
I suoi migliori risultati li ha messi a segno da juniores quando ha vinto l'argento ai Campionati Europei a Squadre del 1986 ed il bronzo in quelli del MEC l'anno successivo.
