Steve Garner è originario del Minnesota da dove si è trasferito a Chicago dove è rimasto per quasi 20 anni.
Nel 2004 si è spostato a Sarasota in Florida dove sostiene che il suo passatempo principale è diventato quello di contare gli uragani.
Amante del buon vino rosso che spesso gli procura il suo capitano Roy Welland, ama i suoi cani dai quali non si separa mai.
Giocatore professionista, l'elenco delle sue affermazioni in campo nazionale comprendono 10 NABC tra cui: le Reisinger del 1997 e del 2001, il Mitchell del 2012 e di Grand National Teams del 1991 e 1995.
In campo internazionale ha vinto, i Cavendish Team del 2001 e del 2004, la Rand Cup del 2018, l'argento nella Bermuda Bowl del 2007, il bronzo alle Olimpiadi del 2000 e nella Rosenblum del 1998 e negli Europei Transnazionali Open a Squadre del 2003.
Da capitano non giocatore ha vinto la Coppa D'Orsi del 2017 e le Vanderbilt del 2019 e del 2023.
Nel 2020 è entrato a far parte del CdA USBF e nel 2024 è stato eletto nella Hall of Fame.

As a non-player captain he won the 2017 Bears Cup and two Vanderbilt (2019 e 2023).
In 2020 he joined the USBF Board of Directors
and in 2024 he elected in Hallo of Fame.
