Tom Hanlon è nato il 9 giugno del 1967 a Rochfortbridge una cittadina della contea del West Meath 80Km ad Ovest di Dublino ma, attualmente vive nella capitale con la compagna Nuala, anche lei bridgista, la figlia di lei Lee, e il loro figlio Colm.
Tom, che fa l'assicuratore, è stato indirizzato al bridge all'età di 14 anni dalla madre Annie ed ha formato un sodalizio con Hugh McGann che è considerato il più forte di tutta l'Irlanda.
