Martin Hoffman was born
on November 15, 1929 in
Prague, then capital of
the former
Czechoslovakia, and
suffered the Nazi
deportation only
surviving him of his
family. His parents were
deported to
Theresienstadt in 1938
where they died, he and
his brother managed to
hide for another six
years, but were
eventually taken and
deported to Auschwitz.
Separated from his
brother, after moving to
various concentration
camps, he was
transferred to
Buchenwald with a
walking march in the
middle of winter which
saw only 127 of the 1000
departing survive. Once
he arrived at the camp,
he declared himself a
gypsy and was put to
work in the kitchens,
until the Americans
liberated him in 1945.
After a stay in an orphaned hostel he was assigned to a London family, the Finchley who started it in the lucrative diamond cutter trade. The family that welcomed him used to play Whist and it was there that Martin learned the game by putting on display an extraordinary predisposition.
He won Crock fords 1981, Spring Foursomes 1969 and 1976, Hubert Phillips 1970, Tollemache 1967. In add on he won Pairs Nationalo Championships inj 1966.
Married to Audrey, who has always assisted him in his activities as a writer and bridge teacher, today he is a respected professional who has partners all over the world and who has won several important International Tournaments.
Martin and Audrey had no children and used to spend the summer in London and winter in Florida.
His books, which have been translated into several languages, have made him famous among bridge players around the world.
He disappeared on May 15, 2018.
