Sandra Ogilvie sposata in Landy è nata il 19 giugno del 1938 a Shirley vicino a Croydon, ma per cercare di sfuggire si bombardamenti della capitale nella seconda guerra mondiale, la sua famiglia si trasferì a Brighton, una città costiera affacciata sulla Manica.
Sandra ha studiato alla Hove Park School, si è laureata in matematica al St. Anne di Oxford, ha preso due master in Analisi numerica e in Calcolo Automatico al New Hall di Cambridge ed ha poi insegnato all'Università di Brighton fin quando non è andata in pensione.
Sandra è stata la prima donna ad essere ammessa nella squadra di bridge della Oxford University.

Ha vissuto per mezzo secolo a Hove e poi si è ritirata a Watermead un villaggio nuovissimo costruito appena fuori Aylesbury.
È stata una delle più forti giocatrici inglesi di tutti i tempi che ancor oggi occupa stabilmente una delle prime 50 posizioni nella speciale classifica di categoria delle World Women Grand Master edita dalla W.B.F.
Vedova di Peter Landy, incontrato in un club di Hove, che la sposò nel 1967 e scomparve nel 2005 (ritratto nella foto a dx assieme a Lou Richard), Sandra che ha appreso il Bridge dal padre, ha rappresentato il suo Paese in numerose competizioni conquistando prestigiose vittorie tra le quali ricordiamo la Venice Cup nel 1981 (prima vittoria di una squadra femminile inglese su quella americana) e nel 1985 e 5 volte gli Europei Femminili a Squadre negli anni 1955, 1977, 1979, 1997 e 1999, competizione alla quale ha rappresentato il suo Paese 16 volte nell'arco di 32 anni.
Sandra ha vinto anche tre allori Olimpici, un bronzo nel 1980 e due argenti nel 1984 e 1988, due bronzi nei Mondiali a Coppie del 1982 e 1986 ed un altro nel Mondiale Individuale Femminile del 1998 ed una messe di medaglie ai giochi del MEC sia nelle gare femminili che in quelle Miste. Un paio di volte è stata anche capitano non giocatore delle Squadre Inglesi maschili.
Sandra che ha avuto due figli, si è prepensionata per organizzare per conto della Federazione Britannica "Bridge for All", un metodo di insegnamento che è divenuto il metodo nazionale e che ha riscosso parecchio successo in molti Paesi anglofoni.
Sandra è anche stata una collaboratrice continuativa della celebre rivista inglese "Bridge Magazine" e ha tenuto una serie di seminari in tutto il Paese che gli consentivano di rivedere tutti gli amici di un tempo.
È scomparsa il 4 gennaio del 2017 dopo che nell'anno precedente la EBU l'aveva premiata con il prestigioso "Diamond Award".
Sandra Landy (19 June 1938 – 4 January 2017), who has died aged 78, was the
highest ranked female bridge player in the world from 1992 until 1996 and from
1999 until 2000.
She was born Sandra Ogilvie in Shirley, near Croydon. During WWII, with bombs dropping all around, the family relocated to Brighton.
She read Maths at St Anne’s College, Oxford, and took a postgraduate diploma in Numerical Analysis and Automatic Computing at New Hall (now Murray Edwards College), Cambridge. Afterwards she taught at Brighton University, becoming Head of the Information Systems Division.
Landy took early retirement and joined the EBU where she developed Bridge for All and edited the Really Easy series of bridge books.
Landy taught herself to play bridge as a child, using Autobridge and a bidding pamphlet given to her by Freddie North. She watched her parents play, and when she was 17 her mother died so she became her father’s bridge partner.
At Oxford, Landy was the first woman to play for the university team and she gained a further varsity ‘blue’ playing for Cambridge.
Landy represented Great Britain in 11 World Championships and 16 Europeans, winning seven gold, eight silver and five bronze medals. She also won all the domestic honours including the Gold Cup, Hubert Phillips Bowl, Spring Fours and more. In 1991 she was the driving force and NPC of Britain’s Open team which won the European Championship in Killarney, Ireland.
Landy served on the English Bridge Union’s Board of Directors from 1989 until 1996 and was a member of the EBU’s Selection Committee for some 16 years.
In 1967 she married Peter Landy whom she met at Avenue Bridge Club. He predeceased her in 2005.
In 2016 Landy was awarded the English Bridge Union’s prestigious Diamond Award.
