Nel 1966 il belga André Lamaitre ebbe l'idea di fondare un Ente che organizzasse le manifestazioni sportive bridgistiche per i Paesi aderenti alla European Economic Community e se ne rese promotore. Il 31 luglio del 1966 nacque così la European Union Bridge League che riuniva Germania, Belgio, Francia, Italia ed Olanda. Negli anni successivi si unirono alla EUBL il Principato di Monaco, la Grecia, la Gran Bretagna, l'Irlanda, la Danimarca e, per ultimo, il Lussemburgo, così che, nel 1980, i Paesi membri erano diventati 11. Tra il 1967 ed il 1998 la  EUBL organizzò una Serie di Campionati sia a Squadre che a Coppie riservati ai Paesi aderenti che, con frequenza biennale, negli anni dispari conferivano dei titoli assai prestigiosi per chi riusciva ad aggiungerli nel proprio palmares. Inoltre la EUBL decise di premiare con una Challenge Cup il Paese che conseguiva complessivamente il miglior risultato nelle varie discipline previste dai Campionati. L'Italia l'ha vinta 10 volte su 16 edizioni! Nel 1988 a Venezia venne approvato un nuovo Statuto dell'organizzazione che, con l'occasione, prese il nome di European Community Bridge League (ECBL) e venne presa la decisione di trasferire i Campionati agli anni pari, un po' per ragioni di bilancio, ed un po' per alternarli ai Campionati Europei organizzati dalla EBL. Dopo l'edizione del 1998, a causa del proliferare dei Paesi Comunitari, la manifestazione venne interrotta per la difficoltà riscontrata a distinguerla chiaramente dai corrispondenti Campionati Europei.

In 1966 the Belgian André Lamaitre had the idea of founding an institution to organize sports events for bridge players and countries belonging to the European Economic Community and he became promoter of it. On July 31, 1966 was born the European Union Bridge League, which brought together Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and the Netherlands. In subsequent years joined the EUBL the Principality of Monaco, Greece, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark and, finally, Luxembourg, so that, in 1980, 11 countries was members of EUBL. Italy won it 10 times out of 16 editions! In 1988 Venice was approved a new charter of the organization with the opportunity and took the name of the European Community Bridge League (ECBL) and the decision was made to transfer the Championships to the even-numbered years, a little 'for budgetary reasons , and a bit to alternate it with the European Championships organized by the EBL. After the 1998 edition, due to the proliferation of European Union countries, the event was interrupted by the difficulties encountered to distinguish it clearly from the corresponding EBL Championships.
