Nato il 28 maggio del 1940 a Kensington una cittadina californiana della baia di San Francisco, ma residente a Brentwood nel Tennessee, Michael Steven Lawrence ha conosciuto il bridge quando era studente all'Università di California per una mera casualità. Durante un esperimento al Laboratorio di Chimica provocò un'esplosione che gli rese inservibile la mano destra per tre settimane e che lo costrinse a girovagare per il campus in cerca di come passare il tempo. Entrato nella sala di lettura dell'Università, conobbe il Bridge e da quel giorno la passione non si è mai spenta.
Universalmente riconosciuto come uno dei migliori insegnanti di bridge di tutti i tempi, è a mio personale avviso, uno dei migliori teorici della dichiarazione americani che sia mai esistito.
Come giocatore è stato uno dei membri dei famosi Dallas Aces, ha vinto tre volte la Bermuda Bowl ed è arrivato secondo alle Olimpiadi di Miami.
World Grand Masters in ambito Nord Americano ha vinto tra l'altro: 4 volte la Reisinger, 2 volte il Mitchell, 5 volte la Vanderbilt, la Spingold del 1969, il Wernher del 1984 e il GNT del 1987. Mike ha anche vinto il Cavendish Team del 1985.
Autore di una ventina di libri che, tradotti in varie lingue, per la loro chiarezza e completezza di analisi costituiscono un vero e proprio decalogo per i giocatori di bridge di tutto il mondo.
Insieme con Fred Gitelman, Mike ha anche iniziato a produrre del software capace di insegnare il bridge in modalità interattiva che sembra avviato a poter riscuotere lo stesso successo dei suoi libri. C'é veramente di che rammaricarsi per il fatto che solo alcune delle sue creazioni letterarie ed informatiche siano state tradotte in lingua italiana.
Nel 2025 è stato eletto nella Hall of Fame.
Born on May 28, 1940 in Kensington, a small Californian town
in the San Francisco Bay Area, but living in Brentwood, Tennessee, Michael
Steven Lawrence discovered bridge when he was a student at the University of
California by pure chance. During an experiment at the Chemistry Laboratory, he
caused an explosion that rendered his right hand useless for three weeks and
forced him to wander around the campus in search of something to do. He entered
the University's reading room and discovered bridge, and from that day on his
passion has never faded.
Universally recognized as one of the best bridge teachers of all time, he is, in my personal opinion, one of the best American bidding theorists who ever existed.
As a player, he was a member of the famous Dallas Aces, won the Bermuda Bowl three times and came in second at the Miami Olympics.
