Thomas  SANDERS

 

 Nato a Nashville nel Tennessee nel 1932, marito della celebre campionessa Carol che gli ha dato sei figli, investitore, coproduttore di Dixieland jazz albums, è stato una delle maggiori personalità del bridge statunitense ed unico laureato della Vanderbilt University a fregiarsi della famosa Coppa.

 Presidente della ACBL nel 1986, chairman del Board nel 1987, fondatore e presidente emerito della ACBL Educational Foundation, consigliere di amministrazione della ACBL dal 1980 al 1989, membro dell'Appeals Committees sia per la ACBL che per la WBF, come giocatore ha rappresentato diverse volte la squadra statunitense ed ha vinto molti tornei, spesso giocando in coppia con la moglie.

 Tra i 12 Campionati Nazionali vinti ricordiamo una Spingold, 3 Vanderbilt ed un Mitchell, tra i trofei internazionali, oltre la medaglia d'argento nel Campionato Mondiale Seniores del 1994 come capitano non giocatore, ha vinto gli Swiss Teams Championships di Israele, il Cavendish individuale del 1979 e quello a Coppie del 1980.

 Tom è anche stato il capitano non giocatore della squadra USA che ha vinto la Bermuda Bowl del 1981.

 Nel 1997 è stato eletto Membro Onorario dell'ACBL e nel 2002 è stata cooptato nella Hall of Fame assieme alla moglie Carol.

È scomparso nel dicembre del 2011 nella sua casa di Nashville.

 

  Thomas Sanders (1932 - 2011) and wife, Carol, were co-recipients of the von Zedtwitz Award (recognizing contributions to bridge through bridge-playing expertise or contributions to the game outside their area of bridge expertise) in 2002. The Sanders, affectionately known by their friends as Mama and Papa Bear, were married in 1956. They have six children and 15 grandchildren.

A Grand Life Master with 16,785 master points, Tommy Sanders was a 12-time NABC champion. He is the only graduate of Vanderbilt University to have won the Vanderbilt Cup, a feat he accomplished three times. He has won titles in mixed, pairs, team and Senior events.

Sanders was non-playing captain of the 1981 Bermuda Bowl champions and has several high finishes in international competition. He was second in the 1994 World Senior Teams. He won the 1981 Cavendish Invitational Pairs (with longtime partner Lou Bluhm).

Sanders represented District 10 on the ACBL Board of Directors from 1980 to 1989. He served as ACBL president in 1986 and as chairman of the Board in 1987. He was instrumental in establishing the ACBL Educational Foundation, serving as president for the first five years of its existence.

Sanders was a traditional jazz buff and has co-produced Dixieland jazz albums

He disappeared in December of 2011 at his home in Nashville.
