Steve Shane è nato a New York il 24 novembre del 1937 ed ha vissuto a Scarsdale prima di stabilirsi definitivamente a White Plain con l'ultima moglie Jane Silver, anche lei buona bridgista.
Steve è il capostipite di una grande famiglia di bridgisti, è stato sposato con la campionessa Gail Greenberg ed il padre di un'altra grande campionessa Jillian Levin oltre che di Penny e di Thomas.
Ha anche tre nipoti bridgisticamente altrettanto famosi Sandra Rimstedt, Justin Blanchard e Shane Blancharde.
Steve ha studiato presso la Roosevelt High School a Wyandotte, presso l'Università del Michigan ad Ann Arbor e presso la Columbia Law School ed è stato presidente della Roosevelt Island Operating Corp.
Grande appassionato di golf, il suo miglior risultato nel bridge consiste nella vittoria del Wernher del 1988.

Steve is the founder of a large bridge players family, has been married to champion Gail Greenberg and the father of another great champion Jillian Levin as well as Penny and Thomas.
She also has three equally famous bridge players, Sandra Rimstedt, Justin Blanchard and Shane Blanchard.
Steve studied at Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, at the University of Michigan and at the Columbia Law School and was chairman of Roosevelt Island Operating Corp.
Great golf enthusiast, his best result in the bridge is the 1988 Wernher's victory.
