The Israeli juniors have been on a tear, going three for three. Last year, they won the World Junior Team Championship. In July, they captured the European junior team title. And last month, they won the open Transnational Teams at the world championships.
Three players were on all of the teams: Alon Birman, Lotan Fisher and Ron Schwartz.
The diagramed deal was Board 30 of 48 from the Transnational final against an Australian team:

At the first table, Birman (North) passed and Nabil Edgtton (East) opened one diamond; Dror Padon (South) overcalled one spade; Paul Gosney (West) raised to two diamonds; and East jumped to three no-trump. The declarer, who at 19 is the youngest winner of a world open silver medal, took 10 tricks.
The auction at the other table highlighted an unusual advantage of the negative double. Fisher (East) opened one diamond; Sartaj Hans (South) intervened with one spade; Schwartz (West), unconcerned about his very weak hearts, made a negative double; and East happily passed.
The Israeli defense against one spade doubled was perfect.
West led the diamond seven, third-highest from an even number of cards or lowest from an odd number. East won with his ace, cashed the spade ace and continued with the spade queen, which South ducked (not that it mattered).
East continued with a low diamond, West taking two tricks in the suit before playing a fourth round. Declarer ruffed and led his club king, West winning with his ace, cashing the queen and playing a third round. East trumped and exited with his last diamond. South ruffed and cashed his spade king, but at Trick 12 had to lead from his king-jack of hearts into East’s ace-queen, resulting in down four.
Minus 430 and plus 800 gave 9 international match points to the Israeli juniors.
