In televisione interpretò insieme alla moglie Gracie Allen la popolare sitcom The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show dal 1950 al 1958.
Vinse il premio Oscar al miglior attore non protagonista nel 1976 per l'interpretazione ne I ragazzi irresistibili.
Morì alla veneranda età di 100 anni dopo aver calcato le scene per oltre tre quarti di secolo.
George è stato anche noto per essere un buon bridgista che si poteva spesso vedere seduto al tavolo verde con suoi amici Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch e Bill Gates.

His career spanned vaudeville, film, radio and television, with and without his wife, Gracie Allen.
His arched eyebrow and cigar smoke punctuation became familiar trademarks for over three quarters of a century.
Enjoying a career resurrection that began at age 79, and ended shortly before his death at 100, Burns was as well known in the last two decades of his life as at any other time during his career.
His parents were Clifford Burns and Daphne Burns, and his siblings were Charles, Cornelia, Zeph, and Cornelius.
George was also known to be a good bridge player who could often be seen sitting at the green table with his friends, Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch and Bill Gates.
