James Eliot Cayne è nato il 14 febbraio del 1934 è cresciuto ad Evanston nell'Illinois e si è laureato alla Purdue University.
Dopo il fallimento del suoi primo matrimonio si trasferì da Chicago a New York nel 1964.
Dopo aver lavorato come taxista e come venditore di obbligazioni municipali, Jimmy nel 1966 iniziò a giocare a bridge e proseguì a tempo pieno quando nel 1969 Alan Greenberg lo portò con lui alla Bear Stearns.

Jimmy diventò Presidente della compagnia nel 1985 e CEO nel 1993, dopo la grande crisi economica dei sub prime vendette le sue azioni, che qualche anno prima valevano circa un miliardo di dollari per 61 milioni e si ritirò dalla compagnia.
Sposatosi una seconda volta con Patricia Denner, anche lei ottima bridgista, hanno avuto due figli, durante la grande crisi del 2008 era spesso irreperibile in quanto impegnato in Tornei Nazionali a telefono spento!
Jimmy è un World Master che ha vinto molti titoli nazionali tra i quali ricordiamo: 2 Jacoby Trophy (1996 e 2005) 3 Spingold (1989, 1990, 2015), 3 Mitchell (1969, 1988, 2011), 6 Reisinger (1977, 1988, 1992, 2007, 2010 e 2011), il GNT del 1994, il Cavendish Pairs del 1982 e nel Cavendish Teams del 1986.
Sul piano internazionale nel 1974 ha conquistato l'argento sia nei Campionati del Mondo a Squadre Miste che in quelli a Coppie Miste.
Ė deceduto il 28 dicembre del 2021 a causa delle consegue di un ictus lasciando la moglie Patricia e due figlie.
Patricia Cayne, che è nata nel 1940 ed oggi vive a Boca Raton, nel 2017 ha vinto il Jacoby.

player.
The son of a patent attorney, Cayne grew up in Evanston, IL and attended Purdue University. He left one semester shy of graduating to join the army.
Cayne left an unsuccessful marriage in Chicago to move to New York in 1964. While in Chicago he had driven a cab and sold scrap metal for a living.
While playing bridge in Manhattan he again drove a cab, and worked in sales Lubenthal and Co. selling municipal bonds.
Cayne won his first national bridge tournament in 1966. He has since won over a dozen North American championships.
Having been hired by Alan ‘Ace’ Greenberg, Cayne started working as a stockbroker at Bear Stearns in 1969. Bear Stearns was founded in 1923 by Joseph Bear, Robert Stearns and Harold Mayer. Cayne combined his bridge connections and sharp sales skills to become a highly successful broker, rising rapidly in the firm.
He played bridge after work with Ace Greenberg, Laurence Tisch and Milton Petrie at the Regency Whist Club on Manhattan’s East Side. Warren Buffett and Malcolm Forbes sometimes played on the same team.
Cayne became president of Bear Stearns in 1985, CEO in 1993 and chairman of the board in 2001.
Cayne attracted controversy while playing in a bridge tournament in Detroit in 2008 during Bear Stearns slide toward bankruptcy.
Beginning in 2007, Bear Stearns was severely affected by the subprime mortgage crisis. Two of Bear Stearns highly leveraged funds run by Ralph Cioffi blew up in 2008.
In 2005, Forbes ranked him as the 384th richest American with an estimated fortune of $900 million.
Cayne ultimately lost hundreds of millions of net worth as a result of the failure of Bear Stearns and sold his stake in the company for $61 million.
Bear Stearns was the fifth largest securities firm in the US – and one of the largest investment banks in the world, prior to it’s sale to JP Morgan Chase. JP Morgan Chase ultimately acquired Bear Stearns in May 2008 at the renegotiated price of $10 per share.
In November 2007, the Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported that Cayne smoked marijuana at the end of bridge tournaments as well as privately. Cayne strenuously denied the pot smoking allegations.
Cayne met his second wife, Patricia Denner at a bridge club. Their daughter Alison is married to former hedge fund manager Jack Schneider.
Jimmy is a World Master who has won many national titles among which are: 2 Trophey Jacoby (1996 and 2005) 3 Spingold (1989, 1990. 2015), 3 Mitchell (1969, 1988, 2011), 6 Reisinger (1977, 1988, 1992, 2007, 2010 e 2011), the Cavendish Pairs in 1982 and the Cavendish Teams in 1986.
At the international level in 1974 has won the silver medal in both the World Mixed Championships teams and pairs.
He dead 28 December 2021 due to ictus and leaves behind his wife, Patricia and two daughters.
Patricia Cayne, born in 1940 and living in Boca Raton, is a fine bridge player that in 2017 winning the Jacoby at the NABC.
