Joe è nato nel 1981 a Brooklyn Center nell'hinterland di Minneapolis e si è diplomato alla Richfield High School. Dopo aver vissuto nel Bronx dove ha operato saltuariamente come trader, oggi vive a Las Vegas dove si dedica al suo vero lavoro che è il bridge.

 Ha iniziato a giocare a 13 anni sotto la guida dei suoi genitori e a 14 ha vinto il suo primo Campionato Regionale, oggi è un World Grand Master.

 Dopo una serie di medaglie di ogni metallo vinte a livello internazionale nelle categorie giovanili, arricchite dal premio Joan Gerard ricevuto nel 2004, il suo primo grande successo nazionale arriva nel 2006 quando vince la Reisinger, seguito dalla Spingold del 2016, dalle Vanderbilt del 2012, 2018 e 2023, dal Mitchell del 2018 e dal GNT del 2025.

 In campo internazionale ha fatto parte degli juniores americani che hanno partecipato alle Olimpiadi Invernali del 2002 arrivando al terzo posto ed ha vinto i Mondiali Juniores a Squadre del 2005 e del 2006.

 Passato nella nazionale maggiore ha conquistato l'argento nella Bermuda Bowl del 2011, ha vinto la  Buffett Cup nel 2012 e finalmente ha vinto la Bermuda Bowl nel 2017.

 Nel 2018 ha vinto l'argento ai World Bridge Series nel Coppie Open.

 Amante degli sport, durante la scuola ha praticato il baseball, basket, il calcio, ed il tennis.

  Joe Grue was born in 1981 in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis, and graduated from Richfield High School. After living in the Bronx, where he occasionally worked as a trader, he now lives in Las Vegas, where he devotes himself to his real career: bridge.

He began playing at 13 under his parents' guidance, and at 14 he won his first Regional Championship. Today, he is a World Grand Master.

After a string of medals in every metal at the international level in the youth categories, highlighted by the Joan Gerard Award in 2004, his first major national success came in 2006 when he won the Reisinger, followed by the Spingold in 2016, the Vanderbilt in 2012, 2018, and 2023, the Mitchell in 2018, and the GNT in 2025.

Internationally, he was part of the American junior team that participated in the 2002 Winter Olympics, finishing third, and won the World Junior Team Championships in 2005 and 2006.

Upon joining the senior national team, he won silver at the 2011 Bermuda Bowl, won the Buffett Cup in 2012, and finally won the Bermuda Bowl in 2017.

In 2018, he won silver at the World Bridge Series in the Open Pairs event.

A sports enthusiast, he played baseball, basketball, soccer, and tennis during school.
