Ralph Katz è nato il 20 maggio del 1957 a Pittsburgh ma è cresciuto a Steubenville in Ohio, dove ha frequentato le scuole superiori Winterville e poi l'Università Francescana. Dal 1982 vive a Burr Ridge nei dintorni della grande Chicago.

Di professione manager ha fatto parte di molti consigli di amministrazione di importanti società e ne ha diretta una sua, per diversi anni.
Ralf ha rappresentato con distinzione il suo Paese diverse volte conquistando a Ginevra la medaglia d'argento nei Mondiali a Coppie Open del 1990 e a Maastricht quella di bronzo nelle Olimpiadi del 2000.
Nel 2009 ha coronato l'inseguimento alla Bermuda Bowl, competizione nella quale ha conquistato anche l'argento nel 2007 e il bronzo nel 2022, anno in cui ha anche vinto la Rosenblum Cup.
World Grand Master, tra i molti suoi successi nel circuito nord americano ricordiamo i Jacoby del 1984 e 2001, i Mitchell del 2002, 2003 e 2006, le Vanderbilt del 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014, 2017 e 2024, i Silodor del 1986, 1996, 2003, le Reisinger del 2000, 2009 e 2021, le Spingold del 1981, 2001, 2002.
In campo internazionale ha vinto, tra l'altro, il Cavendish Teams del 2004.
Nel 2001 è stato eletto dall'ACBL giocatore dell'anno e nel 2018 è stato indotto nella Casa della Fama del bridge americano.
Sua moglie Martha Benson che è nata il 27 giugno del 1968 a Hales Corners nel Wisconsin, ha vinto i Campionati Mondiali Juniores a Squadre nel 1991, è stata Queen of Bridge nel 1986 ed ha vinto il Mixed BAM Teams del 1997.
Il figlio Sam Katz, che è stato "King of Bridge" nel 2006 ricalcando le gesta materne di 20 anni prima, ha cominciato a mietere anche lui qualche successo bridgistico.

Ralf has represented his country with distinction several times winning the silver medal in the World Open Pairs in 1990 and the bronze medal in the Olympics of 2000.

He is also the 2001 ACBL Player of the Year and in 2018 he has elected in the ABL Hall of Fame.
His wife Martha Benson was born on June 27, 1968 in Hales Corners, Wisconsin and she won the junior world championships in 1991.
