Sonty è nato il 2 maggio del 1946 a New York ed è stato uno dei più forti giocatori americani che ha formato una leggendaria partnership durata ben 35 anni con Peter Weischel.

Alan che, occupa uno dei primi 30 posti nella classifica dei World Grand Master ed uno dei primi 20 in quella dei Senior International Master, oggi vive a Gaithersburg nel Maryland con la moglie Robin, ed è famoso in tutto il mondo con il suo nomignolo Sonty e per la eccezionale velocità del suo gioco e, per il suo libro di maggior successo "The Bridge Bum".
Ha vinto le Bermuda Bowl nel 1983 e del 2001, i Transnational del 2000 e del 2013, la Rosenblum Cup del 2006 ed il bronzo ai Senior Team degli Europei del 2001 e l'oro a Squadre nei Senior del 2005, 2007 e 2017.
Tra gli altri Trofei internazionali si ricordano i London Sunday Times del 1973 e 1975, i Cavendish a Coppie del 1976 e del 1977 e la Buffett Cup nel 2010 e 2012.
Sul piano nazionale ha collezionato tra l'altro: 3 Vanderbilts, 3 Spingolds, una Reisingers, 2 Jacoby, 3 Mitchell ed il NGT del 1994.
Nel 1975 è stato eletto "Sportsman dell'anno" dalla I.B.P.A.
Nel 2007 ha ricevuto l'onore di far parte della prestigiosa Hall of Fame del Bridge americano.
He has won the Vanderbilt Cup three times (1972, 1988 and 1999), the Reisinger Trophy in 1973 and the Spingold Trophy in 1980, 1982 and 2000.
Other victories in the NABC + category include winning the Men's Teams in 1971 and 1979; the Life Master Men's Pairs in 1971; the Life Master Pairs in 1977; the Men's Swiss Teams in 1985 and 1987; the Master Mixed Teams in 1989; the Grand National Open Teams in 1994 and the Open B-A-M Teams in 2001.
Besides his aforementioned highly acclaimed book, Sontag has written "Power Precision" and is co-author of "Improve Your Bridge Fast.
Although he is a six-time world champion in contract bridge, winning the prestige Bermuda Bowl twice, Sontag is best known as the author of The Bridge Bum, a book "on everybody's list of the top ten bridge books ever written."
Among his other victories are the Rosenblum Cup, Transnational Open Teams, Senior Bowl, numerous North American Bridge Championships, and twice winning the London Sunday Times and Cavendish Invitational Pairs.
In 1973, he and Steve Altman became the first American players to win the Sunday Times Pairs, at the time the premier invitational tournament in the world. Two years later, Sontag returned to London and won the tournament again, this time with Peter Weichsel, with whom he formed one of the strongest partnerships in the world from the 1970’s until 2005.
The two were partners in 1983 in Stockholm, Sweden, when the United States defeated Italy in one of the most exciting finals in the history of the event.
Sontag returned to the final of the Bermuda Bowl in 2001 in Paris, France to help Rose Meltzer become the first woman ever to win that championship.
He also won the Buffett Cup in 2012 and 2012.
Sontag was inducted into the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Hall of Fame in 2007.
Widely regarded as one of the fastest players in the world, he is known by his nickname Sonty.
Sontag and his wife, Robin, live in Gaithersburg, Maryland with their son Robert.
He was elected in Hall of Fame in 2007.
