Roger W. Bates è nato il 2 luglio del 1947 a Oklahoma ma vive a Mesa in Arizona dove si è laureato nel 1969 e dove ha cominciato la sua carriera bridgistica alla giovane età di 18 anni.

Subito dopo la laurea ha lavorato come contabile ed ha una figlia che vive a New York.
Dopo essere stato un trader del NASDAQ è divenuto uno dei più forti giocatori americani in circolazione dopo aver colto la sua prima vittoria nel 1971 ai Campionati Nord Americani dove si è aggiudicato il Blue Ribbon Pairs in tandem con John Grantham.
Successivamente ha vinto 12 NABC tra cui ricordiamo 4 Vanderbilt (1975, 76, 88, 92), una Spingold nel 1976 e due volte il Jacoby (1985, 87).
Roger ha raggiunto i suoi massimi allori con l'aggiudicazione della Rosenblum Cup nel 1994 e nel 2006 e di tre Senior Bowl consecutive nel 2003 e nel 2005 e nel 2007 seguite ancora dall'oro nel 2013.

Roger W. Bates was born on July 2, 1947, in Oklahoma, but lives in Mesa,
Arizona, where he graduated in 1969 and began his bridge career at the young age
of 18.
Immediately after graduation, he worked as an accountant and has a daughter who lives in New York.
After a period as a NASDAQ trader, he became one of the strongest American players around, achieving his first victory in 1971 at the North American Championships, where he won the Blue Ribbon Pairs title with John Grantham.
He subsequently won 12 NABC titles, including four Vanderbilt titles (1975,
1976, 1988, 1992), a Spingold title in 1976, and two Jacoby titles (1985, 1987).
Roger achieved his greatest successes by winning the Rosenblum Cup in 1994 and
2006, three consecutive Senior Bowl titles in 2003, 2005, and 2007, followed by
gold in 2013.
Several years earlier, partnering with John Mohan, he finished third in the 1978 World Open Pairs Championship in New Orleans, and the following year he won the Cavendish Invitational with Dan Mordecai.
The second Rosenblum victory earned him the title of World Grand Master, but he also holds the title of Senior Grand Master in the WBF World Rankings.
In 2026, he earned the Von Zedtzwitz Award.
