Jan Jansma è nato il 9 agosto del 1962 ad Haarlem una ventina di Km. ad Ovest di Amsterdam e oggi vive a Malden un paesino nell'hinterland sud di Nijmegen che si trova circa 120Km. a SE della capitale, dove ha vissuto per oltre 15 anni insegnando matematica.

Cresciuto in una famiglia di bridgisti che erano tra i soci promotori di un circolo di Nijmegen, ha conosciuto ben presto il gioco e nel 1986 è stato nominato sportivo dell'anno della sua città.
Sposato con Aida Saldzieva, anche lei ottima bridgista di origine macedone e World Women Master, hanno avuto tre figli.
Jan non beve e non fuma ma è un assiduo frequentatore delle discoteche di mezzo mondo.
Jansma ha esordito nel bridge internazionale vincendo gli Europei Juniores di Budapest nel 1986 e bissando il successo l'anno seguente ai Mondiali giocati in casa ad Amsterdam.
Passato di categoria, ha vinto l'argento nel 1998 ed il bronzo nel 2001 al Forbo Nation Cup, l'argento nel 2002 al Forbo International Teams, ed il Cavendish a squadre del 1998.
Alle Olimpiadi di Istanbul del 2004 è arrivato all'argento dietro lo squadrone azzurro per poi conquistare l'oro nell'Europeo Open a Squadre del 2005, l'argento nell'Europeo a Coppie Open del 2013 ed il bronzo nel Transazionale Mondiale del 2013.
Sul piano nazionale ha vinto 4 NABC tra cui la Spingold del 2009 e la Vanderbilt del 2022
Questi successi gli hanno valso il titolo di World Life Master ed uno dei primi posti nella classifica edita dalla World Bridge Federation.
Nel 2016 ha vinto l'oro alle Olimpiadi Miste giocando in coppia con la moglie Aida.

At the Olympics at the 2004 Istanbul arrived to silver behind the blue team and then win the gold in the European Open Teams in 2005, silver in the European Open Pairs in 2013 and the bronze in World Open Transnational in 2013.
On the national level he winning 3 NABC included the Spingold of 2009 and Vanderbilt 2022.
These successes have earned him the title of World International Master and one of the first places in the ranking published by the World Bridge Federation.
In 2016 he won the gold medal in the Mixed Teams Championships, paired his wife.
